Navigation for Walkers by Julian Tippett

Book review by Shiela Dixon

This book will give you the freedom of the countryside by helping you to read the all-important Ordnance Survey map.

It uses OS Explorer maps (1:25,000) but is also relevant to users of Harvey and OS Landranger (1:50,000) maps.

It starts from first steps ('What is a map?') and takes you through how to plan and navigate your route and through to advanced topics such as magnetic north variation. The last chapter looks at modern devices such as GPS and digital mapping software.

It also includes some very useful tools - scale rulers and magnetic north variation adjusters. These are in the form of 'clippy cards' - printed in the back page of the book for you to cut out, mout on card or laminate.
